Jaipur: The Central Government is determined to implement ‘One Nation, One Election’, as it is in the national interest, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Saturday.

Speaking at an event, Meghwal emphasized that simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections were successfully held in 1952, 1957, 1962, and 1967.

“The initiative is in the national interest. The Election Commission, NITI Aayog, and the high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind have already given their consent. The Cabinet approved it after that,” he stated.

Parliamentary Panel Reviewing the Proposal

Meghwal revealed that two bills proposing simultaneous elections have been introduced in the Lok Sabha and are currently under review by a 39-member parliamentary panel.

The panel is also examining a constitutional amendment required to implement the reform.

Discussions are ongoing with various social organizations to gather insights and feedback.

Apart from electoral reforms, Meghwal also addressed the importance of value-based education and legal reforms.

He highlighted that the three new criminal laws, which came into effect in July 2023, integrate spiritual and moral values.
He stressed the need for value-driven education in academic institutions.
