Amid growing speculation about Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service launching in India, the satellite-based broadband service has now been introduced in Bhutan. The Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA) has officially approved Starlink to provide high-speed, satellite-based wireless internet across the country.

Starlink Brings Internet to Remote Areas in Bhutan

With this launch, even rural and mountainous regions in Bhutan, which previously lacked reliable internet connectivity, can now access high-speed broadband. Traditional networks have struggled to function in these challenging terrains, but Starlink’s satellite-based technology provides a new solution for residents in these remote locations.

Before granting approval, BICMA ensured that the service met key requirements, including company registration, local representation, and data privacy standards.

Limitations of Starlink Service in Bhutan

Currently, the service is available only for broadband internet. Direct satellite-to-mobile connectivity is not included at this stage.

How Does Starlink Work?

Starlink is a satellite-based internet service developed by SpaceX. Unlike traditional broadband, which depends on underground cables and mobile towers, Starlink uses satellites to deliver wireless internet directly to users.

Key Features of Starlink:

  • Uses low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide internet access
  • Currently has around 7,000 satellites in multiple constellations (as of January 2024)
  • Designed primarily for rural and isolated areas where traditional networks are unreliable
  • Requires a special Starlink dish and router to connect
  • Can be installed at homes, businesses, and even vehicles with the right setup

Elon Musk has stated that SpaceX plans to refresh the Starlink satellite network every five years to incorporate newer technology and enhance service quality.

With Starlink now operational in Bhutan, it could pave the way for expansion into neighboring regions, including India. As demand for reliable, high-speed internet grows in remote areas, satellite-based connectivity could revolutionize broadband access for millions.
