As Business Insider goes on to explain, Meta’s contract with 10 US fact-checking firms was supposed to end in March 2025 but has continued paying these companies until this figure said to be the end of August under a restructuring compensation plan.

This decision was much delayed by looking at the notice given by the company to the International Fact-checking Network, who informed that 45 minutes in advance, their blog about that decision was published by Joel Kaplan oh who worked with the company as Meta's new head of public policy Kurt. Kaplan has close ties to the Republican Party.

The social media behemoth claims to have more, “acceptable” goals, wishing to change the narrative regarding free speech and expansion of free speech.

Though the company intends to replace `X community notes,` they would not be available immediately. This will lead to and has already led to a lot of social media analyst chaos.

But as the aforementioned report pointed out above, Angie Holan, the IFCN's director remarked to that Meta executive who was unable or would not say whether there were political undertones to the whole issue: `This is politics.’.

Holan was particularly taken aback and said, “Meta's fact checking program was never about censorship,” but “had positively shaped an entire ecosystem of fact checkers.”

But judging from the report, Meta will keep on providing support for IFCN programs, including the recently initiated Business Continuity Fund aimed to provide aid to fact-checking NGOs that suffered financially from natural disasters, civil disorders, military activities, or state repression.

Additionally, Meta clarified that its grant program related to WhatsApp will be retained, but it has not provided whether it will be involved in sponsoring Global Fact, the major annual conference of the IFCN.

This also means that some fact-checkers who depended on Meta as the main client at the moment have a bleak foreseeable future.

For example, Jesse Stiller, the managing editor of Check Your Fact, a US fact-checking firm partnered with Meta for five years, mentioned that, ‘Meta as a client has almost 100%’ and that they cannot survive for more than a few months.

‘To be honest, by March we are over, said, Stiller, as quoted by the report.
