New Delhi: In a move that could strengthen the defense capabilities of the region, especially amid increasing tensions surrounding Greenland, Denmark has secured three additional F-35 Lightning II fighter jets. These fighter jets were reportedly shipped to Skrydstrup Air Base in Denmark from the USA on the 12th of January. As a result of enhanced geopolitical rivalry in the Arctic, these fighter jets might soon be stationed on Greenland’s land.  

Trump’s comments about taking over Greenland made Denmark attempt to beef up its military presence in the nation. Although it is considered an individual region, Greenland is a constituent country that forms the Kingdom of Denmark and therefore its defense lies in the hands of the Danish state.  

In the year 2021, Denmark hinged on the US to acquire over 27 f-35 fighter jets which according to Eurasian Times were estimated to cost around around 7.5 billion dollars in total. Among the fifty poles of these Rods, fifteen jets were sold to Denmark. The jets will be divided among Luke Air Force Base and Denmark: six to Luke AFB and eleven to Denmark. In the year 2023 on October, the second batch of the four f-35 jets was distributed.

Greenland Airport to Deploy F-35s!

With the escalating tensions regarding Greenland, the government of Denmark made the decision to relocate some fighter jets to Greenland, specifically the F-35s as Kangerlussuaq airport is to be upgraded. Greenland is a prime location for control of polar airspace as it is located in the Arctic Circle, And, In case of an attack on North America, it is possible that enemy military aircraft or ballistic missiles can be stationed in this region.

Furthermore, Greenland is also located in the Northwest proximity of the Passage, which is a trade route between the Atlantic and the Pacific regions.

Western countries are accusing Russia of taking military measures in the region with Danish military base tactics. Nord Stream has plenty of evidence to support their claims as this region has increased possibilities of resource deployment because of the oceanic shifts due to climate change and melting glaciers. Russia's strategic military region is not too far from Greenland with a distance of 3,800 kilometers. According to the latest, US president-elect Trump’s statement is what led the Denmark government to send F-35 aircrafts to the island of Greenland. Trump expressed his willingness to integrate Greenland with the United States. He went as far as saying that it was possible he would use economic or military methods to seize control of the state. Since this, Denmark has been seen taking a concerted effort to boost the defense of the basic including the spending on defense.
