New Delhi: Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid got a big relief from the court on Wednesday. The court has released Umar Khalid on interim bail for 7 days. The court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid from 28 December to 3 January. This bail has been granted to Umar Khalid to attend the wedding of his cousin brother and sister.
Umar Khalid charged under UAPA
53 people were killed and more than 700 people were injured in the Delhi riots. After this incident, Umar Khalid was arrested on 13 September 2020. He has been in jail for more than four years. Umar Khalid had also filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court, but the court advised him to go to the lower court. After this, Umar withdrew his petition. Khalid has been charged under the IPC, 1967 Arms Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Apart from this, charges have also been registered under several sections of the IPC.
Judges recuse themselves from hearing
Several rounds of hearings have been held on Umar Khalid's case so far. Sometimes the petitions have been rejected and sometimes the judges themselves have recused themselves from hearing the case. Sharjeel Imam, another accused in the Delhi riots, has also not been able to get bail. He too had approached the Supreme Court, but as the case was pending in the High Court, the bail hearing could not take place in the Supreme Court.
