New Delhi- Taking a big step towards 'one nation, one election' in the country, a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been formed. This committee has 31 members, of which 21 are from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha. These include big names like Union Minister Anurag Thakur and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. This committee will be chaired by BJP MP PP Choudhary. The One Nation One Election Bill has been accepted in the Lok Sabha. Now it has been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
The tenure of the Joint Committee of Parliament will last till the last week of the budget session, when this committee will have to present its report before the House. It has 10 members from BJP, three from Congress, one each from TMC, SP, Shiv Sena, NCP (SP), DMK, TDP, RLD and Janasena.

two thirds majority required
The bill related to One Nation One Election is a Constitution Amendment Bill, so a special majority will be required to pass this bill in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Whereas other bills can be passed with a simple majority. Under Article 368 (2), a special majority is required for constitutional amendment. This means that this bill will have to be approved by a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
What is One Nation-One Election?
The objective of 'One Nation-One Election' is to conduct simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha and all state assemblies. Under this, national and state level elections will be held at the same time once every five years. This will save time, money and resources spent in repeated electoral process. The central government has been claiming for a long time that 'One Nation, One Election' is a big step towards electoral reform.
