
New Delhi: On 27 September, Israel carried out an airstrike in Lebanon's capital Beirut in which several top commanders of the organization, including Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, were killed. After Nasrallah's death, Hashem Safieddin was given the command of Hezbollah's chief. Let us tell you that Hashem Safieddin is Nasrallah's cousin. Hashem is also a religious leader of the Shia community and a senior member of Hezbollah.
Who is Hashem Safieddin?
Born in 1964 in Deir Qanun en Nahr, southern Lebanon, Hashim Safieddine is a prominent Lebanese Shia cleric and a senior Hezbollah leader. He is said to be fleeing Israeli attacks. He has been overseeing Hezbollah's political affairs and heads the Executive Council. He is also the chairman of the Jihad Council which plans the organization's military operations.
Returned to Lebanon in 1994
Safieddine, who was educated at religious centers in Iraq and Iran, returned to Lebanon in 1994 and quickly rose to the top ranks of Hezbollah. In 1995 he joined the Majlis al-Shura, the group's highest decision-making body. Soon after, he was appointed head of the Jihad Council, strengthening his influence over Hezbollah's military and strategic operations. Unlike Nasrallah, Safieddine has recently appeared more openly at political and religious events.
