Who is more powerful between IAS or IRS IT: If you are saying more powerful then it becomes difficult to give a clear answer to this. Because the Constitution has given power to both. But if you read the news of the last 3-4 years, then you will also feel that IAS is no longer as powerful as before and IRS is no longer limited to taxation. And that is why this question must be arising in your mind. Those preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination must want to know this. Because they will be confused as to which of the two services they should give first. So let us know which of the two posts gives more power:

IAS or IRS IT who has more power:
The most powerful post in IAS is that of DM. Where this officer has so much power that he can inspect every department of his district (except some investigation departments like the IT department, CID, CBI, and others). He has so much manpower under him that no one can even imagine. You can understand the power of an IAS as DM from the fact that “DM is the king of the district”. No one can give orders to him except the Chief Secretary, Chief Minister, and Courts (from district to Supreme Court). But it is not lifelong. The post of DM is given only for 5-7 years and after that the officer is promoted to Divisional Commissioner, where he loses most of his power, charm, and public contact. Even if he has become senior, he cannot give orders to any DM.

It is almost like a clerical job, here the power decreases as the post increases. However, this is not the case for IRS IT officers. When they join as SIT they do not have powers like SDM in IAS. The center of power in the IT department is the Commissioner and below him is the Joint Commissioner Income Tax, which is a post equivalent to DM.

To reach the post of Commissioner Income Tax (CIT) and Joint Commissioner Income Tax (JCIT) you have to work for at least 8 years and then you will be promoted to JCIT and to become CIT you have to work for at least 19 years (promotion is a little faster than GST department). This means that here the power increases with the increase in the post. And IT department is one of those departments which is exempted from the control of IAS up to the Revenue Secretary.

Public Interaction:
IAS has much more public interaction than the IRS. Many of you know the name of the DM of your area, but none of you know the name of the Income Tax Commissioner of your district. So, it is clear that IAS has a bigger public domain.
