In a shocking crime that has stunned Kerala, a 23-year-old man murdered five people, including his grandmother, uncle, aunt, 13-year-old brother, and girlfriend, before surrendering to the police. The accused, Afan, had accumulated a massive debt of Rs 65 lakh and had initially planned to die by suicide along with his mother and brother. However, when his family refused to go along with his plan, he resorted to murdering them instead.

Afan’s Killing Spree: How It Unfolded

According to police reports, Afan carried out the murders across three houses in and around Venjaramoodu, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram. His victims included:

  • His grandmother
  • His paternal uncle and aunt
  • His 13-year-old brother
  • His girlfriend

He also attacked his mother, believing he had killed her, but she miraculously survived.

After committing the horrific crimes, Afan calmly walked into the Venjaramoodu police station and surrendered.

Afan’s Suicide Plan That Turned Into Multiple Murders

Afan and his family were under immense financial stress, constantly harassed by creditors over unpaid debts. He reportedly felt betrayed by his grandmother, uncle, and aunt, as they did not offer financial help to ease his family's burden.

With no way out, Afan allegedly tried to convince his mother and younger brother to die by suicide with him. When they refused, he decided to kill them before taking his own life.

  • First, he attacked his mother, leaving her for dead.
  • Then, he went to his grandmother’s house, killed her, and stole her gold necklace.
  • He then proceeded to his uncle and aunt’s home and murdered them.
  • Finally, he killed his girlfriend, believing she would not be able to live without him.

Afan’s Father Unaware of Rs 65 Lakh Debt

Afan’s father, who works in Saudi Arabia, returned home after the tragedy and revealed that he was unaware of the full extent of the family's financial troubles.

“I knew Afan had a debt of Rs 15 lakh, including a bank loan and a loan from a relative, but I never imagined it had reached Rs 65 lakh,” he said.

Investigation and Legal Action

The shocking nature of the case has prompted a detailed police investigation. Authorities are looking into:

  • Afan’s financial records and how he accumulated such a massive debt.
  • His mental state and whether he acted under extreme distress or premeditated the murders.
  • The role of creditors and whether financial harassment played a key role in triggering the crime.

Afan is currently in police custody, and legal proceedings are expected to move forward soon.

This tragic case highlights the devastating impact of financial stress and the need for better mental health support and financial counseling. Afan’s horrific actions have left an entire family shattered, and authorities will now decide his fate in court.
