India’s defense manufacturing sector may witness a major boost with the world’s largest Muslim nation Indonesia considering the purchase of India’s BrahMos missiles in a bid to boost its coastal and maritime defense capabilities. Reports say New Delhi is working out a BraMoS missile deal of about 450 million dollars with Indonesia and in addition to that, it is also facilitating a loan from the State bank of India or any other national bank if need be.
During the recent visit of Indian Navy Chief, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi to Indonesia the details of the deal were discussed and it is likely to discuss again during the visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s to India to attend Republic Day celebrations on January 26 as the chief guest, WION reported.
The report further adds the Indonesian Minister of Defense has sent a formal correspondence to their Indian counterparts regarding the details of the Sea Guardian 450 million dollar deal which would make Indonesia the second Asian country to have the Indian BrahMoS missile after the Philippines.
Importantly, Philippines finalized a $375 million contract with New Delhi in January 2022 for the purchase of three batteries of sea-to-surface variants of BrahMos. Noteworthy Indian-Philippines Defense Relations preceded this contract also. This serves as India’s first defense export contract. Moreover, India and Vietnam too are about to finalize a $700 million deal for BrahMos missiles.
The BrahmoS missile is a joint venture between India and Russia and it is recognized as one of the fastest Missiles ever built. Able to reach approximated cruising speeds at up to 2900 kilometers an hour. Land, sea and air versions of the BrahMoS missile are available, and its range of 290 kilometers makes it a useful asset for attacks or defense with little flying time.
