
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a tree at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Mauritius today as part of the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative, a movement dedicated to environmental sustainability and honoring motherhood.
A Global Tree-Planting Initiative
This is not the first time PM Modi has taken part in this initiative outside India. Earlier, during his visit to Guyana, he undertook a similar tree-planting activity.
- Over 1 billion trees have already been planted in India under this initiative.
- The impact has now extended beyond India, with more than 27,500 trees planted in 136 countries.
- PM Modi himself has personally participated in tree plantations in two countries so far.
His latest act of planting a Bael sapling in Mauritius reinforces India’s global commitment to sustainability and a greener future.
Honoring Mauritian Leaders
During his visit to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, PM Modi was accompanied by Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Together, they laid wreaths to honor two legendary figures in Mauritian history:
- Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam – The founding father of Mauritius.
- Sir Anerood Jugnauth – Former President and Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Speaking about the visit, PM Modi shared on X (formerly Twitter):
"Went to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden with Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. This is a fine botanical garden, a living archive of biodiversity which illustrates Mauritius’ conservation efforts and botanical heritage.”
He also expressed gratitude for the Mauritian PM’s participation in the tree-planting initiative, calling it a symbol of shared commitment to a greener and better future.
A Grand Welcome in Mauritius
Upon his arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, PM Modi received a warm and memorable welcome.
- Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam personally received him.
- Senior officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, and Foreign Minister, were present.
- Around 200 dignitaries attended the welcome ceremony, highlighting the strong ties between India and Mauritius.
Strengthening India-Mauritius Relations
During his visit, PM Modi will:
- Call on the President of Mauritius for diplomatic discussions.
- Meet PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam to discuss bilateral cooperation.
- Engage with senior dignitaries and political leaders to reinforce Indo-Mauritian ties.
The visit underlines India’s strong historical and cultural ties with Mauritius, along with a joint commitment to sustainability, heritage, and global environmental efforts.
