Kolkata: The parents of the RG Kar hospital doctor, who was raped and murdered in Kolkata last year, have expressed their desire to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek justice for their daughter.

Speaking on International Women’s Day (March 8), the grieving mother questioned the safety of women in West Bengal and criticized the delay in justice.

“I would like to meet the PM and appeal to him to intervene in the matter and look into our appeal for justice for our deceased doctor.”

The 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the state-run hospital on August 9, 2023, sparking nationwide outrage.

‘Where is Justice?’: Family’s Struggle for Closure

Seven months after the tragic incident, the victim’s parents are still waiting for answers.

“Our daughter had big dreams, and we never thought she would die like this. It has been seven months, but where is justice? We do not even have the death certificate,” the mother lamented.

She also questioned the lack of safety for women in workplaces:

“If a woman doctor is unsafe at her workplace, then where is her security?”

BJP & TMC React to Parents’ Demand for Meeting PM Modi

BJP’s Response

BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul assured that the Prime Minister would likely listen to their appeal:

“There is a process to seek an appointment with the PM. I am sure that our Prime Minister will give them time and listen to their appeal.”

TMC’s Response

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and state Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya acknowledged their right to approach the PM but defended the state’s actions:

“Anybody in this country has the right to seek an appointment with the PM and meet him. But we must not forget that it was our leader Mamata Banerjee who took the first step, and the culprit was arrested.”

Court Verdict & Ongoing Appeals

On January 20, 2024, a sessions court in Kolkata sentenced Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer and the convict in the case, to life imprisonment till death.

However, both the CBI and the West Bengal government have filed appeals before the Calcutta High Court, demanding capital punishment (death penalty) for Roy.

On February 7, the Calcutta High Court refused to admit the state government’s appeal but accepted the CBI’s plea for the death sentence.
