Amidst the prolonged tension with China, the Philippines is now interested in procuring 9 BrahMos anti-ship coastal batteries from the Indian forces for their Army. This is a continuation of the land based anti ship missile system (ISBASMS) acquisition project that the Philippines had previously carried out.

As part of this project, two missile battery systems were included in the proposal sent to the Philippines by India. The anti-ship-brahmos missile acquisition project in India and the Philippines which commenced in 2015 was later terminated. In 2019 it was converted into landbased missile system ( LBMS) acquisition which was approved in 2021 Yon.

The Philippines signed a contract with India for the purchase of Brah Mos missiles in 2022. As part of the contract tat cost 375 million U S Dollars India is to provide to the Philippines’ Brah Mos land based missiles’ systems together with their batteries, launchers and other necessary items. The Indian forces supplied BrahMos missiles to the Philippines in April 2024.

This package included two supersucra batteries and its configuration systems, which consist of the BrahMos missiles, mobile launchers on the Tatra 6*6 vehicles and an integrated logistics support package.

Personnel from the Philippine Marine Corps have completed operator and maintenance training for the system. In view of the Philippines’s tropical climate, each battery has been configured to have two missile launchers, which is not the case in India where three launchers are used per battery.

The Philippines has become the first nation to buy BrahMos from India and Nigeria, During tsis time talks are still ongoing tat its export to Vietnam, Indonesia, UAE and others.

BrahMos missile features

The joint development of BrahMos missile between India and Russia took place back in the 1990’s and was made into service by. This missile has been fitted on land-based topical batteries, Naval ships and air-launching systems. Depending on the variant, the range of the BrahMos missile can be up to 900 kilometers. However, for the export version, it is ake to 290 kilometers. It has the ability to reach speeds of Mach 2 (2469.6 km/h) and 3 (3,705 km/h) whilst carrying between 200 and 300 kg warheads.
