News agency PTI reported, "On the 26th of March, the Modi government allocated specific land for the construction of ‘samadhi’ (memorial) of former President Pranab Mukherjee, within the boundary of the Rajghat area in the Rashtriya Smriti complex.

The Mukherjee family was informed about this decision by the government, which confirmed that “The Competent Authority has approved for the construction of ‘samadhi of Late Shri Pranab Mukherjee’”.

Mutherjee further explained how his unexpected request felt immensely comforting to him and further explained how reminiscents of it once were enough however his administrations decision took it over the top.

“Baba used to say that State Honours should not be sought, they should be awarded. I’m really thankful that PM Modi went ahead awarding this to honour babas’ name. It gives him no advantage where he is now - beyond applause or scolding. But for his daughter, many words would not suffice the happiness,” she said again.

Pranab Mukherjee's son, Abhijit, also praised the decision of the government, saying, “It is a very proud moment for such family, West Bengal, Congress and other people. Pranab Mukherjee is for everybody.”

“Mr Mukherjee should be given more respect and there is a lot that can be done in his home state of West Bengal. Ofcourse I will send a thanks letter to him (PM Modi),.. I am very pleased to see Congress leaders like former Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh, former President Mr Pranab Mukherjee getting respect from the party and the government” he further added.

Sharmistha Mukherjee slams Cong over Manmohan Singh’s state funeral.

Last week, Sharmistha Mukherjee criticized Congress for claiming that that the BJP-led centre had “humiliated” former PM Manmohan Singh by giving him a state funeral at Nigambodh Ghat,Delhi.

"When my father died, Baba's CWC team was not summoned for an emotional meeting, as even the Congress wished to see him aggrieved. On the other hand, a senior member of the group informed me that such things are not done for Presidents. Any president, based on Baba’s diaries, calls for a CWC meeting and sends a condolence message, I discovered laster, Narayanan passed away and CWC was summoned and Baba herself drafted the message," she had written on X.

She has since maintained that no Congress Working Committee meeting was called on or after 28th February 2020 after the untimely demise of her father which became effective from that date.

"It’s for Congress to answer this. I can only state the fact. But I would like to just add, I do not know whether it was deliberate or sheer negligence. However, in such a great old party, what are the conventions?” she said.

Sharmishta Mukherjee further added that “If at all this is such a loss of institutional memory, if Rahul Gandhi and those around him do not understand how Congress used to operate in these previous contexts, this in itself is serious and sad thing.”
