When we speak of 'genius', we do tend to accept the conventional meaning of the word 'to think outside the box'. But that is where the story of this Indian man and why he is a genius differs entirely from this narrative. Genius is the ability to alter ideas that exist. This is true as that Vashishtha Narayan Singh the maths genius who hails from Bihar completely undermines the endorsed Einstein’s theory, the E=mc2.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh is the child of a Police constable hailing from the Village Basantpur in Bihar and was born in 1942. Singh’s early education was completed at Netarhat School situated in Jharkhand, India after which he attended Patna Science College for further studies. Singh moved up the education system with ease as he managed to secure the first position for both his B.Sc and M.Sc degrees consecutively within two years. One other instance is when he qualified the UGC’s unified Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) exam in the year of 1964.
This Indian mathematician vanished for a considerable time after discrediting Einstein's theory and subsequently reappeared after claiming to have worked with NASA and IIT, which caused Indian Mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh to go missing of, years on end.
Berkeley University awarded him the Genius of Genius title for his remarkable intellect. Some “experts” assert that Singh questioned Einstein’s E = MC² as well as Gauss’ theory, yet alike Albert Einstein Shing too had some family issues, like being mentally ill. Singh also participated at NASA, IIT and even the University of California alongside Singh, his family claims is of Indian descent.
Despite this, Singh's story still circulates widely. Some say he was hired during the Apollo program by NASA, others claim he was sent to assist with intricate computing when the NASA computer they currently had stopped functioning. Regardless, of what is true or not, he remains an enigmatic figure in Indian history.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh obtained his degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1969, and it was Prof. John L. Kelly who appreciated his rare abilities and helped him to get admission onto the University of California, Berkeley. Singh resided in the United States for almost nine years before moving back to India where he was a professor at top colleges including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Kolkata. He did get married but soon got diagnosed with a mental ailment, schizophrenia, which started to worsen. He was already on the verge of getting divorced by 1976 Also, his fame in academia slowly began to evaporate. In the late 1980s Singh suffered an even bigger collapse and it has been reported by various media sources that he underwent treatment and on one supposed train journey left his home. Many ex-people working with him stated that he had been treated and left but years later he was found in his home area homeless.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh was taken into the psychiatric branch NIMHANS, located in Bengaluru, and later BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha aided Singh's treatment at the IHBAS center in Delhi. The genius gradually started to disappear while fighting his illness. Later in life, he returned to the academic world, becoming a lecturer at BNMU Madhepura. Whereas Singh is called a mathematician, I prefer to use italics for a mathematician, who died on November 14, 2019 at the age of 72 without much achievement, and Singh could not fully realize his potential. He was awarded the Padma Shri award posthumously for his work in the field of mathematics.
